July

Some flowers are withered and some joys have died;
The garden reeks with an East Indian scent
From beds where gillyflowers stand weak and spent;
The white heat pales the skies from side to side;
But in still lakes and rivers, cool, content,
Like starry blooms on a new firmament,
White lilies float and regally abide.
In vain the cruel skies their hot rays shed;
The lily does not feel their brazen glare.
In vain the pallid clouds refuse to share
Their dews; the lily feels no thirst, no dread.
Unharmed she lifts her queenly face and head;
She drinks of living waters and keeps fair.

  1. Hmmm, I think this poem describes my July garden perfectly, except for the "East Indian scent." I'm hoping you are enjoying a restful summer, and that all is well with you, Em.

    1. Jodi,
      I'd love to visit you and your garden!
      I'm not quite sure what East Indian scent is, but maybe you can get some!
      We're having a wet and cool summer.
      Take care Jodi.

  2. Well, everyone doesn't like the same things and that's ok. I guess you didn't like D.E. Stevenson.

  3. I too am not sure what the East Indian scent is but would love to know what she meant by that. Our garden is not blooming as fully this summer due to the cool and wet summer. That being said, this week we have summer and things are starting to open up to warm themselves in the sun's rays.

    1. Hello Heidi, and welcome to my blog!
      I’ve put this blog on the backburner due to my mother’s illness. Hopefully I’ll be able to write more often one of these days.
      All of a sudden summer arrived today - but do you think we’re happy about it! Oh no, everybody complains about the heat!
