What do you think that tree-like pole is outside? It seems to have ropes (?) coming down from it. Is it a sail holder? (can you tell I'm not a nautical type?)
I'm certainly not a nautical type either but I've assumed all the time that it is a mast. As a child I was always more interest in what wasn't in the picture - I was curious about what was just outside the picture. This painting gives me the same feeling, I'd like to join the woman at the window and see what she is looking at. Margaretha
I have always assumed that it is the mast of a sailing boat and that, for me, adds to the air of wistfulness in the picture. I want to look out on the view and I want to sail off on the boat. It has endless possibilities.

It is easier to say what and who I'm not. — I'm not my profession — I'm not my salay — I'm not my age — I'm not my illness — I'm not my civil status So who am I? — a person just the right size and age — an untidy pedant — a conservative radical And what do I do? — weave — read — listen to music, classical preferably baroque
This is one of my favourite pictures. I keep a copy on my desk.
